Curious about the possibilities?

Our unique empathetic design approach

A word from founder and principal designer Alston Taggart

I consider myself a visual strategist. I help people grow their businesses by funneling their passion into visuals that lead to tangible results.

What is different about my approach is that I spend time listening deeply to understand who you are and what it is that you are looking for. The final design will not be mine, but yours — in tune with you and your company’s vision, your style, your personality, history, and goals.

I have devoted my career to helping individuals and organizations achieve their mission, and it is my joy to make unique voices and groups heard though inspiring, clear, and stunning visuals.

We’d love to hear from you. Schedule a meeting with us today.

Curious Red Designs

Curious Red Design Business Card

I have always been a maker, learning drawing and sewing from my mother. This passion became all-consuming, driving me to pursue a degree of fine arts and art history near my home at UNC Chapel Hill. After graduating college, I moved up to Washington DC to work with artists Lou Stovall, Sam Gilliam and Rockne Krebbs. Seeking a way to use art to make a difference, I went back to school at the Corcoran to obtain a degree in graphic design.

After a couple years working for large and small firm, I started my own firm, Studio Red Design. My mission-driven and full-service graphic design firm partners with educational institutions, mission-driven organizations, membership organizations and spirituality/wellness clients—on local and international levels—to provide quality and creative solutions to their communication needs. Hugely fulfilling, but I still felt the need to make. During a visit to New Orleans, I had the chance to stop by Betsy Younquist's gallery and was completely taken with her quirky creations so reminiscent of Edward Gorey and Tim Burton. Learning from local artist Tara Shimberg, I started making my own pieces!

I adore working with small beads as they always remind me of the importance of small things and bring me peace and patience (hugely helpful to a mother of teen twin girls!). I use found/recycled objects as possible as they bring a certain permanence and history to each piece. I draw from my art history background to incorporate symbolism, archetypes, and ideas to create wearable artwork assemblages.

Alston Taggart (she, her, hers)
Lead Creative and Owner

Alston.jpg

I am a North Carolinian expat (a graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill with an honors degree in Art History and a minor in Fine Art), and I have been working in Washington, D.C. since 1994. I have always been a student of the amazing and beautiful world we live in, and of its infinite possibilities. I have practiced graphic design since graduating from The Corcoran College of Art+Design in 2000 and have worked for a variety of local and national design firms in the area before establishing Studio Red Design in 2006.

As lead creative and owner, I work with clients from needs identification to project completion, focusing on unique and poignant imagery and typography. For almost 20 years, I have been leading the brand development and implementation for The Heights School, and I had the honor of working with the Dalai Lama when he came to D.C. in 2011, designing all the programs, advertisements and exterior and interior signage for his event at the Verizon Center. A former urban bee keeper, I teach yoga in my free time and bake sourdough bread for friends and family from my homemade starter, named Seymour.
